Salang Pass, Afghanistan The Antonov 24 passenger plane, operated by Pamir Airways, had left Kunduz Airport, Afghanistan, on a domestic passenger flight to Kabul Airport, Afghanistan. There were six crew members and 38 passengers on board. The plane crashed in mountains, killing all the 44 occupants.

The plane was on approach to Kabul about 40 NM from the airport in poor weather conditions when the airplane disappeared from radar. The airplane was found crashed at the Salang Pass, a mountainous area where mountains tops rise at about 3900 meters (13000 ft). The weather was reported extremely bad with snow, flooding and poor visibility in the mountains, which hampered rescue efforts.
