Off Jakarta, IndonesiaThe Boeing 737-500 operated by Sriwijaya took off from Jakarta, Indonesia, for a passenger flight to Pontianak, Indonesia. 56 passengers and 6 crewmembers were onboard. The plane was climbing through about 10,800 feet MSL out of Jakarta when radar and radio contact was lost. Debris were located in water. No survivor has been found among the 62 occupants.

The plane disappeared from radar screens at about 11nm North of Jakarta's airport over the Java Sea. A few seconds befopre, the aircraft had been seen by radar flying on a wrong route. The air traffic controllers tried to contact the plane to instruct him to change heading, but no answer was received from hte crew. According to ADS-B data the aircraft, the aircraft plummeted into the sea at the sink rate greter than 20,000 feet per minutes.

Two days after the accidents, divers located the shattered main wreckage buried in mud on the sea floor at a depth of 75 feet (23 meters).
