Unity Oilfield, South Sudan
Updated on
The Beechcraft 1900D operated by Eagle Aviation on behalf of Light Air Services was performing a charter flight from Unity State oilfield airstrip, South Sudan, to Juba, South Sudan. The aircraft was carrying oil workers. There were 19 passengers and 2 crew members on board. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft crashed near the airstrip. Twenty occupants were killed and one survived (one of the two crewmembers) with serious injuries.
A ground witness reported that the aircraft had already left the oilfield area when one of its wings appeared to break off, causing the aircraft to fall to the ground. The aircraft crashed about 500 metres from the runway and came to rest inverted, sustaining severe damage. There was no fire. Publicly available investigation information classified the accident as a loss of control in flight. No more detailed cause could be established from the publicly available information reviewed.
The Beechcraft was registered in Uganda as 5X-RHB. The aircraft was destroyed.
