The aircraft, on a scheduled cargo flight from Oakland, California, to Memphis International Airport, crashed while attempting to land on runway at Memphis. For undetermined reasons, the freighter's landing gear failed, and the aircraft skidded approximately 3,000 feet, off the runway, coming to rest at a 90° angle to the runway heading. The aircraft was consumed by fire. One crewmember was slightly injured, the other six escaped uninjured.
