Iran Air Boeing 727-286 plane crash
Terman, Iran

Updated on

The Boeing 727-286 operated by Iran Air was performing a passenger flight from Tehran, Iran, to Uromiyeh, Iran. 93 passengers and 12 crew were onboard. After a missed approach on Uromiyeh's Urmia Airport, the crew went around and crashed seconds later, about 5 miles southeast of the airport. 79 occupants were killed, and 26 survived.

The weather conditions at Uromiyeh's Urmia Airport were very poor at the time of the accident, with fog and snowfall. The plane started an ILS approach on runway 21, but the crew could not establish visual contact with the runway at decision height and went around. The crew indicated that they wanted to return to Tehran, as landing at Urmia was not possible due to the weather conditions.

But during the go-around the aircraft lost height. The Boeing 727 impacted mountainous terrain at Terman village about 5 miles (9 km) southeast of the airport and broke up in six major parts. There was no explosion or fire after the crash.
