8 aircraft accidents in China since 2000

The Boeing 747-481 BDSF operated by ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates SkyCargo was performing cargo flight UAE9788 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Hong Kong (China). Four crew members were on board. After landing at Hong Kong International Airport, the aircraft veered off the runway, broke through the airport perimeter fence and came to rest partially in the sea. All four crew members survived. Two airport security officers, who were in a vehicle struck by the aircraft, were killed.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by China Eastern Airlines took off from Kunming, China, for a passenger flight to Guangzhou, China. 123 passengers and 9 crewmembers were on board. The plane was en-route, flying at 29,000 ft (8900 meters) when it suddenly lost altitude and crashed in a wooded mountainous terrain. All 132 people onboard were killed.

The Embraer ERJ-190 operated by Henan Airlines took off from Harbin, China, for a passenger flight to Yichun, China. There were 91 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board. The plane crashed on landing at Yichung airport. 42 people perished, 7 people received serious injuries and 47 minor injuries. At the time of the accident, fog prevailed with a visibility of 300 meters (1000 ft) on Yichun's Moon Mountain Municipal Airport. The airplane was cleared to land, the crew reported they had the approach lights in sight. The plane impacted terrain about 1500 meters (4900 ft) short of runway, slid on the grass and split apart. The aircraft came to a rest approximately 500 meters (1650 ft) from the runway. A passenger said, that it had been a very smooth flight when the airplane touched down hard and was rocked around. The airplane was distorted and holes were in the fuselage after it came to a stand still. The passenger climbed out of a hole. About 1 or 2 minutes after stand still the airplane erupted in huge ball of fire.

The Mc Donnell Douglas MD-11F cargo plane, operated by Zimbabwe-based Avient Aviation, took off from Shanghai, China, bound for Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Seven crewmembers were onboard to perform this cargo flight. The plane crashed during take-off. Three crew members were fatally injured and four survived the accident. The cargo plane accelerated on the runway to take off. When it started to lift off, the aircraft's tail struck the ground. The plane veered off the runway, smashed into a storage building, and burst into flames. Several firemen were needed to overcome the dense black smoke and the fire.

The plane, which had been scheduled to fly from Baotou to China's eastern metropolis of Shanghai, crashed into a frozen lake in Baotou's Nanhai Park just after take-off. Witnesses said the plane plummeted from the sky with thick black smoke coming from its tail section. The plane seemed to stall for a few seconds and dropped to the lake with an explosion. It has probably suffered a sort of technical failure.

The aircraft was on a cargo flight from Taiyuan, China to Riga, Latvia. It crashed shortly after takeoff from Urumqi, China, after making a fuel stop. Reports indicate that the aircraft had extreme difficulty becoming airborne, reaching an altitude of only around 500 feet before crashing into a farm approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the airport. All 7 crew members were killed.

The aircraft was on a passenger flight from Beijing (China) and Dalian (China). The MD-82 was due to land at Dalian Airport at 9:40pm local time. At 9:20, the Captain reported a 'cabin fire' to air traffic controllers, and four minutes later, at 9:24, radio contact was lost as the aircraft disappeared from radar. The aircraft crashed into the Yellow Sea about 6 miles (10 kilometers) off the Dalian coast. A few months later, the Chinese government issued a report which blamed the crash on a fire started intentionally by a passenger, who was a terminally ill cancer patient. Before the flight, this passenger reportedly purchased seven flight insurance policies totalling more than 1.5 million RMB ($187,500 US Dollars). Additionally, investigators searching his apartment found a number of mineral water bottles filled with gasoline. All 112 passengers and crew members were killed in the accident.

The Wuhan Airlines Xian Y-7 was arriving at Wuhan while a severe thunderstorm affected the area. The aircraft held for about thirty minutes before beginning its approach when conditions appeared to allow the flight to continue.
