11 aircraft accidents in Nepal since 2000

The ATR 72-500 operated by Buddha Air was performing scheduled flight BHA 901 from Kathmandu, Nepal, to Bhadrapur, Nepal. There were 51 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board. During a night landing at Chandragadhi Airport, the aircraft touched down well beyond the runway threshold and was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance. It overran the runway end, breached the airport's inner perimeter fence, crossed a stream and came to rest approximately 180 metres beyond the fence. All occupants evacuated the aircraft. Five people, including one crew member, sustained minor injuries. The aircraft sustained extensive damage and was considered damaged beyond repair.

The ATR 72 operated by Yeti Airlines took off from Kathmandu, Nepal, for a passenger flight to Pokhara, Nepal. 68 passengers and 4 crewmembers were onboard. The plane was on final approach to Pokhara's International Airport's when the aircraft stalled. The ATR72 crashed 1,1 NM (2 km) ahead of the runway threshold. All 72 people onboard were killed.

The de Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter operated by Tara Air took off from Pokhara, Nepal, to Jomsom, Nepal. 19 passengers and 3 crewmembers were onboard. The plane was on approach to Jomsom airport, about 16 NM south of Jomsom and at 13,000 ft when it crashed in a mountainous area. The aircraft has been pulverised. All 22 people onboard were killed.

The Let L-410 operated by Summit Air took off from Lukla, Nepal, for a flight to Kathmandu, Nepal. Three crewmembers were onboard. There was no passenger. The plane was taking off from Lukla airport when the aircraft veered off the runway, collided with a parked AS 350 helicopter and destroying it, and came to a stop after colliding with a second AS 350 helicopter. The first officer of the L-410 as well as two security officers on the ground were killed. 4 other people including the captain sustained injuries.

The DHC-6-400 Twin Otter operated by Tara Air took off from Pokhara, Nepal, for a passenger flight to Jomsom, Nepal. 20 passengers and 3 crewmembers were onboard. The plane was enroute about 10 minutes into the flight when radio contact with the aircraft was lost. The wreckage was later found crashed and burned in a mountainous area. All 23 occupants were killed. The crash site is located 225km west of Kathmandu, near Tirkhe Dungha, Dana VDC of Myagdi district. The weather along the route was generally good, with some clouds of dust.

The Dornier Do-228 operated by Sita Air took off from Kathmandu, Nepal, for a domestic flight to Lukla, Nepal. 16 passengers (mainly tourists) and 3 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff. All 19 people aboard died. The twin-propeller was in the initial climb out of Kathmandu’s airport when the crew reported a bird strike and the failure of an engine. The crew attempted to return to the airport, but the plane was losing altitude and was not able to come back to the runway. The crew decided to perform an emergency landing at the bank of Manohara River in Koteshwor village, just outside the airport perimeter. 2 minutes after departure, the plane crashed on the bank of the Manohara river, and burst into flames. The fire has completely destroyed the aircraft, and let no chance to the people onboard. Ground witnesses reported the aircraft appeared to attempt a landing at the river bank. The aircraft was not on fire at that time until after coming to a stand still. Emergency services needed 40 minutes to extinguish the fire. Investigations showed that the bird collided with the right hand engine at about 50 feet (15 meters) above ground causing some part to separate from the engine, the part impacted the vertical tail and disabled the rudder. This made the aircraft uncontrollable. Tower noticed the aircraft began a tight turn at that point.

The Beech 1900D operated by Buddha Air took off from Kathmandu, Nepal, for a sightseeing flight around Mount Everest, with 16 passengers and 3 crewmembers. The plane was expected to return to Kathmandu after a one hour flight, but it crashed while on approach to Kathmandu airport. All 19 occupants of the aircraft perished. The plane was returning from the "Everest Experience" sightseeing flight when the accident happened. The turboprop impacted Kot Dada mountain about 7km (3.8 NM) South-South-East of Kathmandu's Airport. Witnesses reported the plane burst into flames on impact. The weather conditions were bad at the time of the accident, with low visibility, low cloud ceiling and rain.

The Tara Air de Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter took off for a charter flight from Lamidanda, Nepal, to Kathmandu, Nepal. 19 passengers and 3 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed 5 minutes after departure from Lamidanda, killing all 22 people onboard. About five minutes after takeoff from Lamidanda, the plane lost radio contact with ATC. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu 35 minutes after departure from Lamidanda located 75 NM east-southeast of Kathmandu. The aircraft did not arrive on any airstrip until the night, a search by Nepalese helicopters did not locate the aircraft until the following morning. The wreckage of the aircraft was found at an altitude of approximately 8850 feet (2600 meters) at which the airplane had impacted Palunge Mountain near Shrichaur VDC in the Okhaldhunga district. The plane was flying very low and its left wing clipped the top of a mountain, which caused it to crash. The wreckage is scattered over 200 meters in the mountains.

The DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 belonging to Yeti Airlines took off from Katmandu, Nepal, on a domestic flight to Lukla in Nepal's Everest region. 16 passengers and 3 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed and caught fire on landing, killing 18 people. The captain was the only survivor. Weather conditions were reported as poor as the Twin Otter came in to land, with low visibility and heavy clouds. Seconds before landing, the landing gear of the plane snagged a security fence, causing it to crash and burst into flames. The plane ended close to the sloping runway of Lukla airport, completely destroyed and burnt. The Lukla airport is best-known as the gateway to Nepal's Everest region, a popular destination for thousands of climbers and trekkers every year. Lukla Airport has a single runway, 06/24 which is situated at an elevation of 9380 feet (2860 meters). The 1600 feet (490 meters) long bitumen runway has an upslope of 11,75°. Bad weather at the airport frequently halts operations.
