35 plane crashes in year 2010

The Antonov An-22 military transport aircraft belonging to the Russian Air Force took off from Voronezh, Russia, for a military flight to the Tver-Migalovo Military airport, Russia. 12 crew members were onboard. The plane crashed near the village of Krasny Oktyabr, on the border of the Tula and Oryol Regions in central Russia. All 12 people that were onboard were killed. The An-22 disappeared from radar screen while the plane was in flight. The burning remains were discovered 4 hours later, in a forest near the village of Krasny Oktyabr. The wreckage suggests the collision with the ground has been violent. Further to that accident, the Russian air force grounded all Antonov AN-22 transports and Tupolev TU-95MS bombers (fitted with the same kind of engines).

The Tupolev TU-154M operated by South East Airlines (formerly known as Daghestan Airlines) took off from Moscow, Russia, for a passenger flight to Makhachkala, Russia. 163 passengers and 9 crew were onboard. The plane crashed 30 minutes after takeoff, while trying to make an emergency landing. 2 passengers were killed, 19 people received serious and 37 people received minor injuries. The airplane departed from Moscow's Vnukovo Airport with 19.5 tons of fuel on board. The aircraft became airborne at 14:08L (i.e local time), at 14:16L at a height of 6500 meters (21000 ft) the flight data recorder recorded first fluctuations in fuel supply to all three engines, at an altitude of about 9000 meters (29500 ft) engines #1 and #3 (left and right engines) failed. The crew reported the loss of two engines together with navigation equipment, and requested to divert to Moscow Domodedovo about 80 km (43 NM) from their present position. Engine #2 (central engine) became unstable as well but was recovered and continued to run until after landing at 14:36L. The airplane glided to a hard landing on Domodedovo's runway 32R in freezing rain about 30 minutes after departure, went off the runway and impacted a small earthen mound. The plane split in three parts, but no fire erupted. The fuel at Vnukovo was analysed and was found in compliance with all required fuel quality standards. Other aircraft having been fueled from the same supplies have reached their destinations safely. Shortly after the crash, passengers started surfacing from the smoldering wreck as firefighters and medics arrived at the scene.

The Ilyushin IL-76 freighter operated by Sun Way was on a freight flight from Karachi, Pakistan, to Khartoum, Sudan, carrying 8 crew and 31 tons of relief supplies for the Sudan. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff into a building, killing all 8 people onboard and 4 people on the ground. The plane was attempting to return to Karachi airport shortly after takeoff. Traffic Controllers reported one of the engines on fire as the aircraft climbed out of Karachi Airport. The crew didn’t succeed in maintaining the plane airborne, and the plane crashed into buildings of the Naval Housing Colony near Dalmia two minutes after takeoff. The Russian-made plane IL-76 missed several densely populated apartment blocks by a few hundred yards (meters). About 20 houses were damaged or destroyed though most were under construction and believed to be unoccupied. 4 people were killed on ground and many other injured. Witnesses reported the plane in flames as it plunged towards the ground. The aeroplane exploded in a massive fireball.

The Antonov AN-32B belonging to the Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) took off from Monterrey International Airport, Mexico, bound for Santa Lucia, Mexico. The plane was performing a military logistics flight with 5 crew-members onboard. The plane crashed shortly after take-off, killing all five people on board. The Russian twin-engine cargo airplane belonged to 301 Squadron of the Fuerza Aérea Mexicana. The plane had just taken off to the military airbase of Saint Lucia when a problem onboard makes the pilots opt for an emergency landing. But this wouldn't go well and the aircraft would have crashed and later exploded. The plane crashed to the side of a runway near the airport VIP Terminal, narrowly missing two parked biz jets.

The Antonov AN-24 operated by Tarco Airlines was performing a flight from Nyala, Sudan, to Zalingei, Sudan. 38 passengers and crew members were onboard. The plane crashed on landing, killing six of the 38 people on board. The airline reported that the Antonov plane burst two tyres on landing at Zalingei. Then, the airplane broke up in two parts and burst into flames.

The Beechcraft 1900C operated by JS Air was performing a passenger flight. The plane took off from Karachi, Pakistan, bound for Bhit, Pakistan with 17 passengers and 4 crew members. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff. All 21 people onboard were killed. The airplane was chartered by Italian oil company Eni to transport personnel to an oil field near Bhit Shah in Sindh province. Seconds after lift off, the crew reported that the right hand engine failed. They radioed that they was returning to the airport. However, while the airplane was attempting to return to the airport, it nose dived, crashed, and bursts into flames. The wreckage was found near a military depot, near a residential area in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Town. The airplane impacted terrain about 2 minutes after becoming airborne. Television footage showed the aircraft split in two, the front part totally destroyed and the rear section, marked JS Air, torn off alongside two wheels.

The ATR72-212 operated by AeroCaribbean was performing a passenger flight from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, to Havana, Cuba. 61 passengers and 7 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed near Guasimal, killing all 68 people onboard. Air traffic controller reported that the plane made an emergency call, before losing contact with air traffic controllers. The plane went down near the village of Guasimal in Santi Spiritus province. The analysis of flight data and cockpit voice recorders showed the airplane was in good technical condition. The airplane encountered severe icing at FL200 that together with human errors in handling the icing conditions led to the crash.

The Let 410 plane, operated by TRACEP, was on a cargo Flight from Bukavu, Congo, to Shabunda, Congo. 2 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed shortly after take-off, killing both crewmembers. The plane was carrying consignments of food and other goods. The plane crashed minutes after takeoff, near Bugulumisa, 30 km far from Bukavu.

The Transafrik International Hercules L-100-20 (civilian version of the C-130) on behalf of National Air Cargo was performing cargo flight from Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, to Kabul, Afghanistan, with 8 crewmembers onboard. The plane impacted a mountain near Kabul, killing all 8 people onboard. The plane was carrying NATO supplies. The airplane was on a VFR flight from Bagram to Kabul. The crew joined the downwind for runway 29 and was instructed to maintain visual separation to a preceding aircraft. The crew continued on the downwind until impacting a mountain in the Pol-e Charkhi area about 6 NM (11 km) northeast of Kabul Airport at approximately 1000 feet above aerodrome elevation and about 200 feet below the peak. It was very dark with less than a quarter moon. The airplane was not equipped with a terrain awareness and warning system. Mountains raise up to 3000 meters (9800 ft) about 25-30km east of the city of Kabul. The Gharib Ghar Peak approximately 6 NM (11 km) northeast of the airport rises to about 2200 meters (7200 feet).

The ATR-42-300 operated by Conviasa, took off from Porlamor, Venezuela for a passenger flight to Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. 47 passengers and 4 crew were onboard. The plane crashed while attempting an emergency landing. 17 people have been killed and 34 survived the accident (among which several were injured). While the plane was approaching its destination airport, at about 30 NM from the runway, the crew reported control problems and requested to land immediately to Puerto Ordaz airport. But the plane didn’t make the runway. Ground witnesses reported that the airplane entangled with a high voltage line before impacting ground. The plane impacted ground about 9 kilometres (5 NM) from the airport. Although the airplane fell into a crowded area, there have been no casualties and injuries on the ground. Onboard, the pilot and two of the other three crew members were among those killed.

The Boeing 747-400 freighter belonging to United Parcel Service (UPS) took off from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a cargo flight to Köln, Germany. 2 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing both crewmembers. The plane crashed while attempting to land at Dubai International Airport, from where the airplane had departed about 45 minutes earlier. Shortly after takeoff, the crew declared emergency reporting a fire and smoke in the cockpit, and performed an emergency descent. They requested an immediate return to Dubai. Later they reported they were unable to read their instruments and were unable to change frequency asking for frequent updates on their altitude and speed from ATC. They were vectored for a straight in approach to Dubai's runway 12L. Being too high and too fast for landing they were offered to divert to Sharjah or join a right hand downwind for another visual approach to runway 12L. About 20 minutes after declaring emergency, the airplane impacted ground in an unpopulated area of Dubai outskirts, near a busy highway intersection south-east of Dubai airport. The airplane erupted in a large fireball when he hit the ground, and slid about 400 meters. Several buildings, apparently all of them under construction, have been set on fire by the crash. The plane was loaded with mostly children's toys and plastic products.

The Filair LET L-410 was performing a passenger flight from Kinshasa, Congo, to Bandundu, Congo, with 18 passengers and 3 crewmembers. The plane crashed into a house about 2 km from Bandundu Airport. 20 occupants were killed in the accident, and one passenger survived. The airplane was destroyed, there was no fire. After an abortive attempt to land, the aircraft turned away and crashed towards the edge of Bandundu city, hitting an earthen house. The cause of the crash is unknown, but it is very likely that it has been caused by a human error that lead the plane to stall. The owner of the private airline Filair, a Belgian citizen, was at the controls of the Let-410 plane and was among those killed. 2 months after the accident, an African media reported the presence of a crocodile onboard that escaped from a suitcase, leading to a stampede. Passengers then rushed to the cockpit unbalancing the aircraft to a point, where control was lost. This story has then been reported by many international media. However, this is a very unlikely story: it is based on the testimony of an unidentified person. Nobody on ground remembers having seen a crocodile and the plane survivor has never told about such a story. In addition, among all the photos that were taken on the crash scene, no crocodile have been captured.

The Embraer ERJ-145 operated by Passaredo Transportes Aereos LTDA, performing flight from Sao Paulo Guarulhos, Brazil to Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil with 24 passengers and 3 crew, crashed on landing at Vitória da Conquista Airport. Two passengers received minor injuries, the other occupants remained uninjured. The airplane received substantial damage. The plane was performing a visual approach to runway 15. But the plane touched down short of runway, the tail hitting the ground first. This missed landing caused the entire landing gear to be ripped off the aircraft that went out of control and skidded on its belly onto the runway and veered off the runway before coming to a stop. Both engines were hit hard and received serious damage. The right hand engine burst into flames which were doused by airport fire services. The aircraft received also heavy damage to its underbelly and wings and horizontal stabilizer.

The Embraer ERJ-190 operated by Henan Airlines took off from Harbin, China, for a passenger flight to Yichun, China. There were 91 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board. The plane crashed on landing at Yichung airport. 42 people perished, 7 people received serious injuries and 47 minor injuries. At the time of the accident, fog prevailed with a visibility of 300 meters (1000 ft) on Yichun's Moon Mountain Municipal Airport. The airplane was cleared to land, the crew reported they had the approach lights in sight. The plane impacted terrain about 1500 meters (4900 ft) short of runway, slid on the grass and split apart. The aircraft came to a rest approximately 500 meters (1650 ft) from the runway. A passenger said, that it had been a very smooth flight when the airplane touched down hard and was rocked around. The airplane was distorted and holes were in the fuselage after it came to a stand still. The passenger climbed out of a hole. About 1 or 2 minutes after stand still the airplane erupted in huge ball of fire.

The Boeing 737-73V operated by Aires took off from Bogota, Colombia, for a passenger flight to San Andrés Island, Colombia. 125 passengers and 6 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crash-landed at San Andrés Island Airport. One passenger died. 119 people were injured (5 of them were seriously injured), and 11 unharmed. Thunderstorms were reported in the vicinity of the Carribean Island when the Boeing 737 was approaching to the San Andrés Island Airport runway 06. At the time of the accident the visibility was reported at 4000 meters (13000 feet), rain and winds around 15 knots. The crew did not report any malfunction of the airplane and no emergency call was radioed prior to impact. The plane touched down short of the runway, the landing gear was torn off on impact, and the Boeing 737 slid onto the runway on its belly as the fuselage fractured. The Boeing 737 broke in three parts. Firefighters quickly doused the beginnings of a fire on a wing. In interviews one of the pilots confirmed the airplane was struck by a lightning just short of the runway. The other did not recall a lightning strike, but a steep uncontrollable descent.

The Antonov AN-24 operated by Katekavia was performing a passenger flight from Krasnoyarsk, Russia to Igarka, Russia with 11 passengers and 4 crew. The plane crashed while on final approach to Igarka Airport. Twelve occupants were killed in the accident, and three survived. The aircraft was on a final ILS approach to Igarka's runway 12 in night conditions, light rain, low cloud, reduced visibility and thunderstorm activity in the area, when the airplane impacted a birch grove about 500 meters (1600 feet) from the runway threshold and about 300 meters (1000 feet) to the right of the extended runway center line. The airplane broke up and burst into flames. Photos of the wreckage suggest that the passenger cabin have been completely destroyed by the fire, while the cockpit seems to have been spared. Both pilots and the flight engineer survived with serious injuries, the 11 passengers and a flight attendant died.

The Fairchild C-123 Provider cargo aircraft, operated by All West Freight originated at Palmer Wolf Lake Airport,AK, USA and was destined for Unalakleet, AK, USA. The plane crashed at the southern flanks of Mount Healy, Alaska, USA, about 1NM from the Denali National Park, about 180 miles north of Anchorage. The aircraft burst into flames on impact and disintegrated. Three crewmembers were onboard. All of them perished in the accident. The flight was to carry a large generator to Unalakleet. The flight was performed according to visual flight rules, no flight plan had been filed, the crew was not in contact with air traffic control and no radar services were provided. Numerous witnesses observed the plane flying slow and low (about 300-500 feet above the ground), flaps and gear were retracted, the engines were working. Cloud base was at about 3500-4000 feet. They observed the airplane pitch up to nearly vertical, roll left and nose dive toward the ground. A witness took two pictures, the first picture showed the airplane in straight and level flight, the second a few seconds later shows the airplane inverted in a near vertical descent just above the tree line. The airplane impacted sloped wooded terrain adjacent to the park highway at an elevation of 2158 feet, the wreckage area is confined within 250 by 300 feet (75 by 90 meters). A post impact fire consumed most of the cockpit area, fuselage, inboard sections of the wings (around fuel tanks), both flaps, and damaged a majority of the tail section and outboard sections of the wings. The post impact fire also started a small forest fire around the main wreckage and to an area adjacent to the accident site. The generator came to rest upright in the center of the wreckage consistent with its position in the cargo bay. The owner of All West Freight, who was also a pilot of the C-123, was among those that were onboard.

The AirBlue Airbus A321-200 was performing a passenger flight from Karachi, Pakistan to Islamabad, Pakistan with 146 passengers and 6 crew. The plane was on approach to Islamabad in poor weather conditions when the airplane impacted the terrain. All 152 occupants of the airplane perished in the crash. Monsoon rain and low visibility were prevailing during the Airbus A321 approach to Islamabad airport. The airplane had first approached the airport from the Southeast (suggesting an approach to runway 30), and ended by a go-around. The crew was about to try a second attempt from the Northwest (suggesting an approach to runway 12). While repositioning for the second approach the airplane impacted the Margalla Hills. The location of the impact is about 10 NM (18 km) North of the airport at a height of about 1000 feet (300 meters) above the airport. At the time of the arrival runway 12 was active. The airplane was performing an ILS approach to runway 30 circling runway 12. Initial investigation results suggest the airplane was flying too low in poor weather conditions and low visibility and incorrectly turned too late.

The Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F was performing a cargo flight from Frankfurt, Germany, to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 2 crewmembers and 80 tons of goods were onboard. The freighter crashed while landing at Riyadh airport. The captain received minor injuries, and the first officer has been seriously injured. The plane is damaged beyond repairs. The MD-11F approached Riyadh airport, and hard-landed on runway 33L. The aircraft bounced on the first touchdown. This first touchdown was followed by two touchdowns. On the 3rd touchdown (g-load: 4.4g), the fuselage aft of the wing ruptured. This caused the fuel line to the #2 engine (central engine) and the APU to rupture. Fuel spread within the main gear area and ignited. The aircraft eventually ran off to the left of the runway, where the nose gear collapsed and the flight crew declared a Mayday. The airplane came to a stand still on soft ground just off the left hand runway edge. The two pilots exited the plane using emergency escape slides. Fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire that broke out in the centre area of the aircraft, front and rear portion were visibly not consumed by the fire.
