22 accidents of Ilyushin aircraft since 2000

The Ilyushin Il-76 operated by the Algerian Air Force took off from Boufarik, Algeria, for a military flight to Béchar Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport, Algeria. 247 soldiers with their family, as well as 10 crewmembers were onboard. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff burst into flames. All 257 occupants were killed. Witnesses saw the aircraft lifting off before losing altitude, crashing and bursting into flames. It is unclear whether a fire was observed before the aircraft crashed.

The Ilyushin IL-76T freighter operated by Aero Services took off from Pointe Noire, Congo, for a cargo flight to Brazzaville, Congo. 6 crewmembers and one passenger were onboard. The plane was carrying cars and various goods. It crashed while on approach to Brazzaville airport, killing all 7 occupants and as many as 25 people on the ground. The plane was far too low on final approach to Brazzaville airport, and the weather conditions were very bad with heavy thunderstorms reported around the airport. The aircraft clipped two strong branches of a large tree about 1080 meters ahead of the runway threshold at about twice the height of local houses, clipped 6 smaller trees about 1015 meters ahead of the runway threshold at about the height of the houses and left first debris behind about 985 meters ahead of the runway threshold. It then crushed several dwellings, killing 25 people on the ground and injuring many others. The main wreckage came to rest in a ravine about 870 meters before the runway threshold.

The Ilyushin IL-76 belonging to Silk Way Airlines and operated on behalf of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) took off from Baku, Azerbaijan, for a cargo flight to Bagram Air Force Base, Afghanistan. 9 crewmembers and 18 tons of cargo were onboard. The plane crashed while on approach to Bagram's Air Force Base. All the nine people onboard were killed. The transport plane carried a total of 18 tons of cargo (automobiles and trailers). It was on approach to Bagram's Air Force Base, descending through 13000 ft (4000 meters) when radar contact was lost. At the same time a flash and fire were observed on a mountainside about 25 km from Bagram. No emergency call and no report about any anomaly had been received from the crew. The wreckage was located in a mountainous area, near Akhshay, at an altitude of 12500 ft (3800 meters).

The Ilyushin IL-76 freighter operated by Sun Way was on a freight flight from Karachi, Pakistan, to Khartoum, Sudan, carrying 8 crew and 31 tons of relief supplies for the Sudan. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff into a building, killing all 8 people onboard and 4 people on the ground. The plane was attempting to return to Karachi airport shortly after takeoff. Traffic Controllers reported one of the engines on fire as the aircraft climbed out of Karachi Airport. The crew didn’t succeed in maintaining the plane airborne, and the plane crashed into buildings of the Naval Housing Colony near Dalmia two minutes after takeoff. The Russian-made plane IL-76 missed several densely populated apartment blocks by a few hundred yards (meters). About 20 houses were damaged or destroyed though most were under construction and believed to be unoccupied. 4 people were killed on ground and many other injured. Witnesses reported the plane in flames as it plunged towards the ground. The aeroplane exploded in a massive fireball.

The Ilyushin 76, owned by the Russian Ministry of Interior, took off from Mirny, Russia, on a positioning flight to Irkutsk, Russia. 4 passengers and 7 crewmembers were onboard. The plane was destroyed when it crashed immediately after takeoff, killing the 11 people onboard. The Ilyushin 76 transport plane took off from Mirny Airport. The airplane climbed to a height of 20-30 metres. It banked right and crashed about 1,5 km from the runway.

The Ilyushin 76-MD belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) was destroyed in an accident in the village of Vali Abad, Iran, near the capital Tehran. All 7 people onboard were killed. The report said the crash took place in Qarchak, an area close to where an army parade was taking place. First reports said that the Iranian warplane had crashed in Qarchak during an aerial maneuver carried out to celebrate the national Sacred Defense Week. But this was then denied by the IRIAF, which stated that the crash of the plane during training in Qarchak had no links with the aerial maneuver. The Ilyushin 76-MD that crashed is a militarised IL-76, with a radar installed on the top of the fuselage. The aircraft is used in military operation as a flying radar.

The Aria Air Ilyushin 62M arrived at Mashhad, Iran, following a domestic flight from Tehran, Iran. 153 passengers and crewmembers were onboard. The plane crash-landed when it landed at Mashhad. Among those onboard, 16 people were killed and 31 were wounded. The airplane flew too fast during the approach and landing. The usual landing speed for an Il-62 would have been between 125 and 145 kts, yet the plane landed at a speed of 170 kts. In addition, the plane touched down halfway on the 12500 feet (3800 m) long asphalt runway, meaning that the remaining distance available was clearly not enough to stop the plane before the end of the runway. The IL-62M overshot the runway and collided with a wall located more than 1100 meters from runway. Weather conditions at the time of the accident showed the plane made a cross-wind landing, with moderate winds reported. Photos of the crash scene show the plane resting on its tail next to a field, the nose section completely ripped off. Further to this accident, the licence of Aria Airlines had been revoked.

The Ilyushin IL-76 cargo plane owned by the Russian-based Aerolift international cargo company was chartered by Dynacorp to transport tents and water purification equipment for the African Peace Mission to Somalia. 7 passengers and 4 crewmembers were onboard. The plane took off from Entebbe Airport, Uganda, bound for Mogadishu International Airport, Somalia. The IL-76 crashed into Lake Victoria shortly after takeoff, killing all the people onboard.

The Ilyushin IL-76, chartered by a private Sudanese company called Ababeel Aviation, was on a cargo flight originating from Khartoum, Sudan. The plane was carrying goods to south Sudan's capital Juba. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing the four crewmen. The accident happened just seconds after it took off. The Russian-made aircraft appeared to develop a problem with its wing or engines as it lift off. Then, the plane appeared to have careered across a major road, tearing down power lines in its way, and exploded in an open space near an office building. The whole plane blew up. Wreckage was strewn across a wide area. The Sudanese president has grounded all Antonov and Ilyushin planes from operating from all Sudanese airports and sacked the head of the Civil Aviation Authority after this latest in a series of plane crashes.

The Ilyushin IL-76 belonging to the Belarus-based Transaviaexport Airlines had delivered equipment for Ugandan peacekeepers in Mogadishu, the Somalia capital. It crashed shortly after takeoff from Mogadishu airport. All 11 people onboard were killed. The Russian-made plane was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile just after takeoff. The airplane suffered substantial damage following the missile impact and became uncontrollable. It came down in an inaccessible, wooded area in the outskirts of north Mogadishu. Witnesses said they saw the burning plane come down and heard the sound of a missile being fired shortly before the crash. Other said that one of the wings exploded in the air. When the plane hit the ground, another explosion occurred.

The aircraft was on a cargo flight from Mwanza Airport to Khartoum (Sudan), carrying fish fillet, when it plunged into Lake Victoria shortly after take-off. All the crew members were killed.

The aircraft, on a cargo flight from Sharjah to Khartoum, crashed shortly before landing after the crew reported fuel system problems. The crew reported that he would attempt an emergency landing in the desert but the aircraft crashed and exploded.

The aircraft was on a cargo flight from Taiyuan, China to Riga, Latvia. It crashed shortly after takeoff from Urumqi, China, after making a fuel stop. Reports indicate that the aircraft had extreme difficulty becoming airborne, reaching an altitude of only around 500 feet before crashing into a farm approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the airport. All 7 crew members were killed.

The aircraft, on a cargo flight from Ankara, Turkey to Kabul, Afghanistan, crashed on takeoff from Baku (Azerbaijan) after a routine fuel stop. The plane climbed to an altitude of several hundred feet, before falling back to the ground and erupting in flames. 5 out of 7 crew members were killed.

The cargo aircraft was leased to the Congolese Ministry of Defense and had been operating in Congo since December, 2002 (the aircraft had the ability to carry passengers). On a passenger flight from Kinshasa to Lubumbashi, at an altitude of FL330 (i.e 33000 ft), the aircraft's rear cargo door opened, ejecting at least 140 occupants from the plane. The 140 occupants ejected died. The 60 people that remained onboard survived.

The aircraft was on a flight from Zahedan to Kerman. It crashed 330 feet below the peak of Sirach Mountain approximately 35nm southeast of Kerman. Weather at the time of the accident was poor. All 275 passengers and crew members were killed in the accident.

The aircraft, on a cargo flight from Macau, China, to Baucau, East Timor crashed short of the runway while attempting to land in foggy weather conditions. All 6 people onboard were killed.

The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport while on a repositioning flight to St. Petersburg. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft enter a steep climb immediately after takeoff, bank left, and crash into a forest near the end of the runway. Examination of the aircraft's Digital Flight Data Recorder indicates that, two seconds after lift-off, the plane's horizontal stabilizer spontaneously shifted to a full nose-up position. The Captain immediately pushed the control yoke fully forward in an attempt to lower the aircraft's nose, but was unsuccessful in doing so. Two flight attendants aboard survived, 14 other people aboard died.

The aircraft's crew reported an in-flight fire at FL290 (29000 ft – 9000 meters), and declared intentions to perform an emergency landing. The aircraft broke up and caught fire during the landing attempt at Novaya Inya, Russia. All 18 passengers and crew members were killed.

The aircraft was on a passenger flight from Khatanga to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. The plane also carried 180 kilograms of cargo belonging to the company IRS Aero. The plane suddenly disappeared from radar screen. Some time later, its remains were found near the village of Zakharyino in the Yaroslavl region. All 27 people onboard were killed. The investigation showed that the aircraft crashed after a steep descent due to a malfunction in the elevator control system while flying under auto-pilot. Moreover, serious violations of the regulations on aircraft maintenance and organization of flights have been uncovered.

The aircraft was being used to fly construction materials from a military airfield just outside Moscow to Norilsk. After take-off, the aircraft reached an altitude of about 150 feet when it crashed about 550 yards from the end of the runway. All 10 people onboard were killed.

The Russian Air Force Ilyushin Il-18 was approaching Batumi, Georgia, in an area affected by heavy rain and thunderstorms. The crew advised air traffic control that it intended to alter the flight path to avoid the most active weather cells.
