The plane was in the initial climb through 750 feet (200 meters) when the Airbus A321 flew through a flock of sea gulls and ingested them into both engines. This resulted in both engines failure, prompting the crew to land straight ahead in a corn field. All the people onboard survived, 10 occupants were injured. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. A few seconds after takeoff, birds got caught in the engines, with the left engine stalling immediately. Then they got caught in the right engine, which also stalled. The plane had reached an altitude of 750 ft (200 meters) but was then unable to maintain altitude. The captain took control manually and decided to land in a corn field straight ahead about 2.8NM past the runway. The landing was performed with landing gear retracted. Although the Airbus A320 received substantial damage, there was no fuel leak and no fire erupted. The occupants were evacuated via the slides. 10 of them required medical attention.

The plane crashed while it was on final approach. 6 occupants were killed, and a 3 year-old girl survived with serious injuries. The twin-engine short-range passenger plane was on final approach at around 500 feet (150 meters) above ground level when the aircraft rolled right and entered a steep descent. The aircraft fell into a forest with almost no forward speed and a high vertical speed. The wreckage was found about 800 meters (0.5 NM) from the runway threshold. The distance from first ground contact to final position was 3 meters (10 feet), showing the aircraft had almost no forward speed when it crashed. There had been no fire and or explosion. Investigations have shown that the right hand propeller went into reverse mode (also known as beta mode) while the aircraft was descending and passing 500 feet above ground level, and remained in that position until impact with the ground. The left hand engine continued to operate normally. The crew recognized the right hand propeller had gone into beta mode. The right hand beta mode as well as the crew actions caused the aircraft to slow, roll and yaw right almost 180 degrees. Weather conditions were good at Nelkan at the time of the accident, with good visibility and low wind.

The plane was carrying 92 people, including 84 passengers and eight crew members. The Tupolev crashed in the Black Sea, minutes after takeoff from Sochi. All 92 people onboard were killed. The plane initially took off from Moscow, Russia. En route to Latakia, the plane landed in Sochi to refuel. Shortly after it took off from Sochi, during climb, the plane made a U-turn back towards the coastline and disappeared off radar screens. The plane impacted the waters of the Black Sea and was destroyed. Wreckage was found at a depth of 50 to 70 meters. No major weather patterns were present at the time of the accident. The Tu-154 was carrying soldiers, reporters and 64 members of the famed Alexandrov military music ensemble, the army’s official choir, who were to perform for Russian troops in Syria. The plane was manufactured in 1983 and clocked 6,689 hours of flight. The last repair was on December 29, 2014, and in September 2016 it underwent scheduled maintenance.

The plane crashed during landing at Rostov on Don airport. There are no survivors: all 62 people onboard were killed. Bad weather conditions with low visibility and strong winds were prevailing at Rostov on Don airport at the time of the accident. The Boeing 737 has first attempted to land but aborted the approach due to weather and entered a hold initially at 8000 feet. After 30 minutes at 8000 feet the aircraft climbed to FL150. After about 2 hours of holding the aircraft commenced another approach to Rostov's runway 22 with winds from 240 degrees at 27 knots (14 m/s) gusting 42 knots (22 m/s). The second approach was flown manually in flight director mode. At 720 feet of height and 2,42 NM (4,5 km) before the runway threshold the crew decided to go around. the crew applied the go-around procedure : engines accelerated to TOGA, landing gear retracted and flaps reduced to 15 degrees. Climbing through a height of 1900 feet at nose up attitude of 18 degrees the pilot flying pushed the yoke forward resulting in a nose down movement and an increase in airspeed above 200 kts. The engine thrust was reduced for a brief period resulting in a speed decrease, then engine thrust was increased again to TOGA. At a height of 2950 feet a simultaneous nose down control input and a stabilizer nose down deflection occurred resulting in the aircraft, after having reached 1000 meters/3300 feet, to begin to descend and experience a vertical acceleration of -1.0G. According to Flight Data Recorder, the nose down trim input came from the stabilizer trim switch at the control column and lasted for 12 seconds while the cockpit voice recorder recorded specific noise of the trim wheels rotating. The following crew recovery actions did not allow to avoid an impact with the ground. The aircraft impacted the runway about 120 meters past the runway threshold with a speed of more than 324 kts and more than 50 degrees pitch nose. The Boeing 737 was pulverised.

The airplane was cleared for takeoff from runway 06. Visibility was poor with 350 meters, but the visibility on the runway was better with an RVR (Runway Visual Range) of around 1000 meters. During takeoff, while the plane was at high speed, it impacted a snowplow. The airplane rolled over and burst into flames. The driver of the snowplow survived, and explained he was lost and was not aware he was on the runway. Debris from the aircraft was scattered up to 200 meters from the crash site. One of the engine was found some 50 meters from the crash site, while one of the landing gears was ripped off and discovered nearly 200 meters from the main mass of debris.

The crew performed an adequate approach to Moscow Vnukovo's runway 19 (length 3,060 meters/10,040 feet), and landed within the designated touch down zone. However, the crew was not able to stop the plane before the end of the runway. The Tupolev overran the end of the runway, broke through the localizer antenna, the airport perimeter fence, broke up and came to a stop on elevated highway M3 about 400 meters/1200 feet past the runway end. It had been snowing prior to the accident and there was a significant cross wind with gusts up to 29 knots. A measurement of the runway friction coefficients 15 minutes after the accident with calibrated equipment determined a value suitable for landing of the aircraft.

The twin-engine turbo-prop plane was performing a domestic flight to carry people to the oil town of Surgut. The plane took off from Tyumen Airport, a regional center in Siberia about 1,700 kilometers east of Moscow. However, contact had been lost with the plane just over three minutes after take-off. shortly before the crash, witnesses heard a bang and saw smoke coming out from the plane. The plane lost altitude, and the crew attempted an emergency landing in a snow-covered field. The plane impacted the ground about 1.4 NM (3 km) away from the takeoff runway end. The 21-year-old ATR 72 burst into flames after the impact. The plane snapped in two, and ended lying in a snowy field with only the tail and rear visible. The captain and both flight attendants died in the crash, the first officer is amongst the 12 survivors. First analysis of the data showed that both engines were working normally until impact with the ground. The aircraft had climbed to a maximum altitude of 210 meters (688 feet), then banked 35 degrees to the right followed by a bank to the left that reached more than 50 degrees at impact with the ground. Due to environmental conditions the aircraft was to be de-iced before departure. However, it was reported the de-icing was not carried out properly.

Debris are scattered on the highway and in the nearby gardens of several private homes at the outskirts of the Besovets village. No home was hit. Weather reports indicated a poor visibility of about 2000 meters (6500 feet), rain and overcast cloud at 400 ft (120 meters). Petrozavodsk's runway 01/19 (former 02/20) is 2500 meters/8200 feet long. The airport offers non-precision NDB approaches to runway 01 and 19.

The cutting edge aircraft was about to be handed over to the Myanmar (Burma) Air Force. Two of the occupants were nationals of Myanmar and are believed to have been the pilots at the controls at the time of the crash. Just before the accident, the plane was en-route between the Voronezh and Belgorod regions. Eyewitnesses on the ground reported one of the wings and the tail separated from the aircraft and fall off. Officials confirmed finding debris of the aircraft about 1.5 NM (3 km) from the actual crash site, confirming the airplane began to break up in flight. Part of the wing and debris from inside the cabin has been located along the route from the first debris to the final crash site, none of that debris showing any evidence of fire. The plane has been destroyed by the impact on the ground and burst into flames.

The airplane had just been pushed back, the engines were being started when ground staff ordered an emergency shut down of the engines due to a fire that broke out in the rear of the aircraft between frames 62 and 65 (neither engines nor the APU were the source of the fire). The engines were shut down, the airplane de-powered and an evacuation was initiated. The fire reached rapidly the inside of the passenger cabin. Emergency services were able to extinguish the fire about 42 minutes after the fire broke out. A passenger said that the flames began to spread, especially after one of the passengers opened an emergency exit and air rushed in. The plane then quickly filled up with smoke that was black and acrid from burning plastic. 3 people died in this accident. 10 people were seriously injured, including six who were badly burned and four who suffered broken bones or other trauma. Most of the other injured passengers sought treatment for poisoning after inhaling toxic fumes.

The airplane departed from Moscow's Vnukovo Airport with 19.5 tons of fuel on board. The aircraft became airborne at 14:08L (i.e local time), at 14:16L at a height of 6500 meters (21000 ft) the flight data recorder recorded first fluctuations in fuel supply to all three engines, at an altitude of about 9000 meters (29500 ft) engines #1 and #3 (left and right engines) failed. The crew reported the loss of two engines together with navigation equipment, and requested to divert to Moscow Domodedovo about 80 km (43 NM) from their present position. Engine #2 (central engine) became unstable as well but was recovered and continued to run until after landing at 14:36L. The airplane glided to a hard landing on Domodedovo's runway 32R in freezing rain about 30 minutes after departure, went off the runway and impacted a small earthen mound. The plane split in three parts, but no fire erupted. The fuel at Vnukovo was analysed and was found in compliance with all required fuel quality standards. Other aircraft having been fueled from the same supplies have reached their destinations safely. Shortly after the crash, passengers started surfacing from the smoldering wreck as firefighters and medics arrived at the scene.

The plane was destroyed when it crashed on approach to Smolensk Airport in poor visibility. All 96 people on board were killed. Weather conditions at Smolensk were reportedly poor, with heavy fog. The airplane was on its first approach, when he was advised by Air Traffic Controller of a very poor visibility of 400 meters due to fog and recommended to divert to another airport, but the crew however responded that they would give it one try and divert thereafter if they were not able to land. The final approach was flown on autopilot and autothrust. 18 seconds prior to impact with the first obstacle the terrain avoidance warning system warned the crew of the risk a collision with the terrain. 5 seconds prior to impact with first obstacles the decision was made to go around and the autopilot was disconnected. The airplane first impacted a barrier 40 meters (130 ft) left of the extended centerline of the runway and 1100 meters (3500 ft) before the threshold of the runway. At this distance the tri-jet should have been at a height of 60 meters (200 ft), the standard for a 3° glideslope. The third impact with an obstacle, an 8m-tall birch tree of 30-40cm trunk diameter contacted by the left hand wing, 840 meters (2700 ft) before the runway threshold and about 80 meters (260 ft) left of the extended runway centerline, led to the first break up of the aircraft in flight, the aircraft rolled inverted and impacted ground 5 seconds later. The airplane came to rest about 350-500 meters (1150–1600 ft) short of the runway threshold and about 150 meters (500 ft) left of the extended runway centreline. Impact forces were estimated in excess of 100G and were not survivable. Investigators noted the unusual crew interaction performed during this flight, due to the introduction of a navigator among the crewmember. No procedures were available for that type of crew combination and interaction, as the airplane is usually flown with a 3-man cockpit (captain, first officer, and engineer) and all training, documentation and manuals were set up only for a crew of three. The cockpit voice recorder also revealed that persons not belonging to the flight crew were on the flight deck about 20 minutes prior to impact. Rescuers that arrived on the crash scenes saw pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the debris. Three flights were to land at the Air Base in that period of time: the first was a Yakovlev YAK-40 carrying journalists accompanying Poland's president, which made a safe landing. The second was a Russian Ilyushin IL-76, which diverted after two unsuccessful approaches. The third was the presidential Tupolev TU-154M. Polish Aviation Accident Investigation Commission have released in July 2011 their final report. It concludes that the immediate cause of the accident was the descent below the minimum descent altitude at an excessive rate of descent in weather conditions which prevented visual contact with the ground, as well as a delayed execution of the go-around procedure. Those circumstances led to an impact on a terrain obstacle resulting in separation of a part of the left wing with aileron and consequently to the loss of aircraft control and eventual ground impact. Circumstances contributing to the accident were: Failure to monitor altitude by means of a pressure altimeter during a non-precision approach; Failure by the crew to respond to the PULL UP warning generated by the TAWS; Attempt to execute the go-around maneuver under the control of ABSU (automatic go-around); Approach Control confirming to the crew the correct position of the airplane in relation to the RWY threshold, glide slope, and course which might have affirmed the crew's belief that the approach was proceeding correctly although the airplane was actually outside the permissible deviation margin; Failure by LZC to inform the crew about descending below the glide slope and delayed issuance of the level-out command; Incorrect training of the Tu-154M flight crews in the 36 Regiment. The reports also identified that Unfavourable factors were: Incorrect coordination of the crew's work, which placed an excessive burden on the aircraft commander in the final phase of the flight; Insufficient flight preparation of the crew; The crew‘s insufficient knowledge of the airplane's systems and their limitations; Inadequate cross-monitoring among the crew members and failure to respond to the mistakes committed; Crew composition inadequate for the task; Ineffective immediate supervision of the 36 Regiment's flight training process by the Air Force Command; Failure by the 36 Regiment to develop procedures governing the crew's actions in the event of failure to meet the established approach criteria, using radio altimeter for establishing alarm altitude values for various types of approach, and distribution of duties in a multi-crew flight; Sporadic performance of flight support duties by LZC over the last 12 months, in particular under difficult weather conditions, and lack of practical experience as LZC at the SMOLENSK NORTH airfield.

The plane crashed during approach to Moskva-Domodedovo Airport, in a forest, about one kilometre short of the runway. Among the eight people onboard, four were seriously injured, and four others escaped without major injuries. Due to heavy fog on Moscow airport, the plane had to wait on a holding pattern. He then began an approach to Moscow airport, and attempt to land at night in fog and poor visibility. The crew did not report any failures, malfunctions, or the intention to make an emergency landing. But around one kilometre from touchdown the aircraft lost communication and disappeared from radar screens. Search efforts found the Tu-204's wreckage in woodland, where trees reached a height of up to 30m (100ft). There was no explosion or fire. First reports shows that the plan ran out of fuel while on holding pattern, and was not able then to reach the runway. Russian Aviation Authorities have banned Aviastar, with immediate effect, from conducting passenger transport.

The plane plunged into scrubland and railway tracks on the edge of the city narrowly short of houses. All the 88 people onboard were killed. The jet had lost communication at the height of 1,100 metres (3,600 feet) as it approached Perm airport and disappeared from air traffic controllers' radar. At that moment, the Boeing 737 was in difficult weather conditions. The airplane was found within Perm's city limits completely destroyed and on fire. It crashed into an unpopulated area of the city, a few hundred meters from residential buildings. Shattered fragments of the plane were scattered over an area of more than four square kilometres and destroyed a 100-metre section of track used by the Trans-Siberian railway. One witness described seeing the plane pass over his house before watching in horror as it exploded and sent massive chunks of burning wreckage flying to the ground.

The Tu-134 passengers jet owned by Russian airline UTAir, carrying 50 passengers and seven crewmembers, was commuting from the Siberian city of Surgut to the western city of Belgorod with a stop in Samara, a city on the Volga River, about 885 kilometres southeast of Moscow. Weather conditions were very poor at Samara as the twin-engine plane approached the airport: horizontal visibility was 150 meters and vertical visibility was 300 feet. Heavy and freezing fog had surrounded the area. The airplane contacted the ground 400 m short of the runway. The left wing hit the ground and separated from the fuselage. Then the plane rolled on its back and the fuselage broke apart. 6 passengers died, 20 occupants were injured and 31 escaped without injury. Prosecutors investigating the crash in the central Russian city of Samara said bad weather and pilot error were the most likely causes. After the crash, the plane's wrecked fuselage lay on thick snow yards from the landing strip. It took several minutes to the rescuers to reach the crash scene. The plane’s wings, tail and engine were scattered about as rescuers worked to evacuate surviving victims and bodies of the dead and police searched for clues.

The A320 operating Armavia flight RNV 967 from Erevan (Armenia), to Sochi (Russia) disappeared from radar screens while it was performing its second approach. The crew had first decided to abort the landing because of the weather conditions, and to come back to the departure airport. A few minutes later, the crew finally decided to land at Sochi airport. During this second approach, the plane plummeted into the black sea 6 km off shore. The crew did not send any distress call. All 105 passengers and 8 crew members were killed. At the time of the accident, the weather conditions were poor: horizontal visibility reduced at 1,500 m and vertical visibility reduced at 500 ft, presence of thunder clouds, light wind and light rain showers. The black boxes and parts of the plane have been rapidly localised at a depth of 1500 ft (450 meters). The black boxes have been recovered and analysed. It was reported that the technical side was not to blame, and the whole blame is put on the “human factor”. But it is not reported whether it was the pilot or the air traffic controller. Questions are raised to understand why the crew decided to land at Sochi airport under poor weather conditions after having initially decided to come back to their departure airport. The crash could be due to a speed loss, leading to a stall. The aircraft altitude was not enough make a recovery maneuver. An unaddressed but widely embraced speculation circulated that human error was to blame for the deaths. Specifically, as it is popularly known, the first few days of May are traditionally days of heavy drinking in Russia. Some believe that control tower personnel were incapacitated by vodka and were incapable of performing their duties. The rumour was fuelled especially after Sochi authorities were said to have secluded the air traffic controller on duty the night of May 3. Another version of the cause of the disaster is that a brawl broke out by powerful persons on board who demanded that the pilot lands the plane, regardless of safety concerns. The A320, registered under the number EK-32009, began operating for Armavia in February 2004. The aircraft had accumulated over 28,200 flight hours in close to 14,400 flights.

Criteria for the inclusion of an airplane accident in our database

All airplane crashes that happened since January 1st 2000 and matching all the following criteria are part of this database:

  • The accident involves at least one public transport airplane. A flight is considered as public transport when it carries, from point A to point B, passengers or cargo for commercial purposes. Public transport operators must hold a national air operator’s certificate and an operating licence.
  • The accident involves at least one airplane having a maximum take off weight equal or more than 12,000 lb (5,7 tons). This corresponds to the definition of a large aeroplane in the sense of the civil aviation regulation. Airplanes in this category comply with more stringent regulations.
  • The accident resulted in a hull loss of at least one public transport airplane. Hull loss means the airplane is damage beyond repairs.

A few events in that database don’t match with those criteria, such as relevant events of flight tests aircraft, or military transport planes.
